A Sensational Saturday
On the day my oldest son took the mound and led our fall baseball team to a 15-6 victory (He had 8 Ks, a double, a walk and 2 RBI.), the Turners headed to Nationals Park for an amazing event. My wife was able to enjoy our son's game, but she was not able to partake in the 2017 Season Plan Holder Appreciation Party at Nationals Park. This was our first year as plan holders and coincidentally this was the first time the Washington Nationals hosted such an event so I have been told.
When we first RSVP'd for the event, we had to register for either the autograph station or the photo station. Being a collector of sports memorabilia, I jumped at the chance to get an autograph. Selfishly, I didn't even consider what the kids may have wanted and I had serious reservations about not selecting the photo station.
Once we arrived at the event, we were directed to attend the Kids Press Conference with Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez where kids were able to ask questions to the Nationals stars. My son was one of the kids chosen among many to ask his favorite player, Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez a simple, but very meaninful question. After they both answered his question, he had the biggest smile on his face.
After that we stood in line to get a random autograph from a Nationals player and that player turned out to be Matt Albers. Unbeknownst to me, the players wouldn't sign a baseball at least for the Turners they wouldn't; they would only sign a card. I was happy to get the signed card for each of my sons, but I was really regretting not getting the photo op at that point. We heard there was another Kids Press Conference with Ryan Zimmerman and Howie Kendrick so we started to head in that direction. As we got closer, a staff member told us to head down towards the field to get our picture taken with a couple of players. Yes! Of course I didn't ask any questions. I just headed towards the field and we were able to get our picture taken with Stephen Strasburg and Joe Ross. Strasbug noticed my son had a game, so he asked DJ if they won and DJ said yes and he told Strasburg the score. Strasburg said, "Man, you boat raced them!"
We ended the day listening to Howie Kendrick and Ryan Zimmerman answer all sorts of questions from the kids. My boys didn't get to ask any questions during this session. It was a great event; especially for my sons. I mean for them to get that kind of access from players they only get to see from their center field seats; it's something they will never forget. And I won't forget to get choose the photo station next year.
