Is Baseball Cool?

Is Baseball Cool?

My brother sent me a link from Bleacher Report, The Make Baseball Cool Again Commission and it got me thinking about whether or not baseball is cool? For me, baseball is my favorite sport followed by basketball and then football. For most, football is king, then basketball and then baseball would be a distant second or third or maybe not on the list at all. If you are not a fan of baseball then obviously, your answer is going to be, no it's not cool. But as a fan of baseball, this was a tough question for me to answer. Because in some ways baseball is cool and in other ways maybe it's not so cool.

First of all, I would say baseball wasn't cool until Ken Griffey Jr. burst on the scene rocking his hat backwards during the home run derby. And let's not forget the Nike Air Griffey Max kicks all decked out in Seattle Mariners colors. I didn't even know where the hell Seattle was until Ken Griffey Jr. arrived on the scene. Okay maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But I do know wearing your hat backwards was cool as hell and I don't care what the baseball purist say.

That being said, where are the Air Trouts? Who has a pair of the Under Armour Bryce Harper 3s? What about the Kris Bryant LS volume 1s? They don't exist! My son would go crazy for a pair of Under Armour Bryce Harper kicks. If Bryce Harper had regular sneakers and not just cleats, I am pretty sure he would wear them to school and you know what? That would be cool and he might even wear his hat backwards. Also, where are the commercials and the endorsements? How are you going to make baseball cool if the kids don't know who the players are? The best players don't even get marketed in their own city. The Nationals had five all-stars and the only recent commercial I seen from a Nationals players was a T-Mobile advertisement featuring Bryce Harper. When it comes to marketing, hands down basketball is the coolest sport on the planet. So in this aspect, I would say baseball has some work to do in order to get it in the cool zone.

As Digable Planets would say wearing a baseball hat is the Rebirth of Slick or Cool LIke Dat. Because there is nothing cooler than wearing a MLB team hat. I don't care if you wear it forwards or backwards; you can find men, women and children wearing baseball caps reppin' their team and city inside and outside of ballparks. Jay Z even bragged about wearing baseball hats.

I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.

Hanging with your friends and family at the ballpark is an awesome experience too. Going to the ballpark is much more enjoyable than watching it on TV. Most people that are not into baseball only see it as pitching and hitting. They say the game is too slow, but there is much more tto the game. There are inner workings of the game that change from inning to inning; batter to batter; pitch to pitch. And watching your kid score the game and recognizing the difference between a F-7 (flyout to left field) and a 6-4-3 (double play, shortstop to second to first) is great.

So is baseball cool? If you ask my boys they would say baseball is very cool and so would me and my wife, but Major League Baseball could do a lot more to bring a little more swag to the sport. Until then the Turners will just have to be the coolest family at Nationals Park...even if our hats aren't on backwards.
