The Real March Madness
This is the first time since high school that I did not fill out a NCAA bracket. It’s really not that big of a deal because I always pick North Carolina to win the tournament every year anyway. However, I did help my wife fill out a bracket so I guess I can put my hopes and satisfaction into hoping she wins. Although Villanova just lost and I’m pretty sure that side of her bracket is jacked up!
Speaking of hopes; there are a lot kids hoping that one day they will be participating on college basketball’s biggest stage one day. My wife, kids and I are at a middle school AAU tourney supporting my cousin who is a coach for one of the teams. First of all, I thought it was high school because the kids are so big, so skilled, so fast. Did I say big? I saw this eighth grader dunk with two hands!
Tournaments like these are great for the kids because they get a lot of exposure, but many of them get exposed. One of the teams got beat by an easy 40! If you can’t go left, here comes the trap. If your weight ain’t up, here comes the elbows and hips. If you can’t shoot the 3, then you better be one helluva defender or you will be on the bench! Everyone doesn’t get to play here. This ain’t a participation league. And if your team is sponsored by Nike, you better not have on Adidas or you won’t be able to play. I’m watching a team and everyone of these kids has on Under Armour and nothing else. And you wonder how a lot of these kids pick their college. It starts here. It starts now!
There are 10 courts and they are all filled with teams, plus teams on standby at every court to showcase their skills. These teams are from all over; Florida, Wisconsin, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland. And the parents hang on every possession as if their child’s scholarship depends on it. This ain’t a game to them, it’s for real. Coach is telling the kid to listen to him. Dad is telling his son to listen to him. I caught quite a few parents screaming at the referee. I heard a mother yelling at the coach, “Put my son in!”
Coach put him in and he couldn’t go left. Here comes the press. Coach took him out.
My cousin’s team is down 3 with 10 seconds left. They draw up a play. Number 4 runs around a series of screens; 3, 2, 1. Nothing, but the bottom. Overtime!
Unfortunately they lost in overtime. Madness I tell ya. Complete madness!
