Mo' Better Blues (And Maize)
I have to admit we tailgated with the best of them on Saturday. We fired up the gas grill and loaded it up with burgers, brats, sausages and baked beans. We powered up our 42 inch TV, watched the noon games and twisted quite a few bottle caps. The four of us even let our competitive juices flow as we battled each other in a couple of friendly games of cornhole.
After a few hours of tailgating we entered Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium to see what we hoped to be a competitive football game between the Maryland Terrapins and the Michigan Wolverines. Two years ago, we attended this game and Michigan won 28-0 and the stadium was filled with maize and blue. Unfortunately this year was more of the same as the cornhole games in the parking lot were the only competition we witnessed at Capital One Field. Not to mention, there was an abundance of Michigan fans all over the stadium once again.
The Wolverines out muscled and out hustled an undermanned Terrapin team that was dominated in all phases of football. The Terps fought and scrapped and hustled and still they found themselves down 28-0 at halftime. The Terps continued to battle and I continued to cheer them on from my truck as I listened to the second half on the radio while driving home. As much as I wanted to stay, the score, the weather and the great slate of evening football games forced me to abandon the game at halftime.
Despite the outcome of the game, the tailgate was a success. Hopefully we can have an even better tailgate in a couple of weeks when Maryland faces Penn State.
